Wide load ahead! | 3.15m John Deere 8520T & Grimme GB 430 | CTF | Spring 2017

Potatoes are best grown in uncompacted soil. In order to achieve this Dutch farm Klompe Landbouw uses a very wide outfit to plant them. The John Deere 8520T crawler tractor was imported from the United States. Its track width is 3.15 metres. The soil is cultivated using a Grimme GR hook tine cultivator and then the potatoes are planted using a GB 430 belt planter. The variety is the local speciality ‘Hoeksche Rooie’.

This method of farming is called ‘controlled traffic farming’ (CTF). All field work is carried out with the same track width of 3.15m, in order to reduce compaction.
